ZZZThe sport of Rugby is a well-known and popular game throughout the world. In North America, there is a loyal group of supporters who play and watch the game religiously, but the main sporting public in the United States does not know or understand the rules or gameplay of Rugby.

To many sporting fans in the United States, Rugby is viewed as a game similar to American Football. From the shape of the ball, to the tackling of other players, to the goal posts at each end of the field, many things look alike.

One of the major differences between the two sports is that Rugby players wear no pads, so every bone-crunching hit you see out there, really is bone-crunching. Rugby players only wear rugby boots, rugby shorts, rugby shirts and rugby jerseys and that is it. No helmets and no pads at all.

Also in Rugby, the ball can only be advanced by a player who is in possession of the ball and is running forward. If you want to pass, it has to be backwards, kind of like a lateral in American Football. So if you see a teammate streaking down the field wide open, know that you cannot throw the ball to him like you are Tim Tebow. It has to be a pass backwards from the point of where the ball is.

Another major difference in Rugby from American football is that in Rugby, there is no blocking allowed. So if a player has the ball and is running with it, there will be no one to block in front of him, which does make sense since the only way to pass the ball is backwards, hence all your teammates are behind you.

In Rugby, there are no set positions like there are in American football, like a quarterback, or linebacker. Each player must be able to play in all aspects of the game, from running to passing to kicking to tackling. Because a change of possession happens so frequently, one minute you may be running with the ball and the next thing you know, you may be chasing an opponent down to tackle him.

In Rugby, once a player is tackled, he has one second to voluntarily fumble the ball, and if he doesn’t that player is penalized. The player who fumbled may not touch the ball until he fully stands up again. Also along those lines, if a player on defense makes a tackle, he cannot pick up the fumbled ball until he has fully stood up on his feet.

In Rugby each team gets 15 players on the field at all times, for a total of 30 combined players in a match. This is different from American Football in which each team gets 11 players on the field, for a combined total of 22 participants.

A major rule to know in Rugby is the dropped ball penalty. If a teammate passes the ball to another teammate as they are running down the field, a penalty will be called. This is called a “knock on.” When this action happens, the other team is given the ball at the exact spot where the drop took place at. When this happens near your own end-zone it is not good. It is like throwing an interception in American Football in the shadow of your own end-zone.
