Rugby balls

Rugby balls are oval in shape and have four panels. It can’t be more than 300 mm long or more than 790 mm in circumference from end to end. In width, the ball may not be over 630 mm in circumference. It must weigh between 400 and 440 grams.

A rugby ball should have a pressure of 10 lbs. per square inch at sea level. The dimensions of the ball may only be reduced for younger players. The ball may be specially treated to make it resistant to mud and easier to grip. The casing of rugby balls are not required to be made of leather.

At the beginning of a game, a rugby ball is kicked from midfield to the opposing team. The ball is in continuous play unless a player steps out of bounds, commits a rule infraction, is tackled, or scores. The balls are thrown, caught, kicked, and carried by runners and take a lot of abuse.
