The ball may be specially treated to make it resistant to mud and easier
to grip. The casing of rugby balls are not required to be made of leather.
At the beginning of a game, a rugby ball is kicked from midfield to
the opposing team. The ball is in continuous play unless a player steps
out of bounds, commits a rule infraction, is tackled, or scores. The
balls are thrown, caught, kicked, and carried by runners and take a
lot of abuse.
