Rugby clothing
Rugby clothing consists of a collared jersey, shorts, long socks, and
boots with studs on them. Additional items of clothing that can be worn
are fingerless gloves, shin guards, headgear, and shoulder pads. Most
players choose to wear a mouthpiece to protect their teeth from damage.
Women players are allowed to wear chest pads.
The International Rugby Board bans certain items of rugby clothing.
No garment can be worn that is contaminated by blood, jewelry, sharp
or abrasive items, communication devices, or shorts with padding. Clothing
is generally worn to identify teams and players.
All items of rugby clothing must be approved and conform to the specifications
in IRB Regulation 12. Shoulder pads and headgear must bear the IRB Approval
Mark. Prior to a match, the referee or judge inspects the players’
clothing and studs. At any time before or during play a referee can
require a player to remove any part of his or her clothing that may
be dangerous or illegal.
