Rugby equipment FAQs

What is rugby?
Rugby is a game played with a cylindrical ball. The object is to put the ball through the opposing team’s goalposts. There are 15 players on each team; there are eight attackmen and seven defensemen. The ball may be carried, passed or kicked. The team with the most goals wins the game.

Is a helmet allowed in rugby?
A helmet is prohibited in the game of rugby. A head covering may be worn that is made of a soft material or leather. However, it may not be padded. The covering will reduce the amount of head abrasions and also absorb some shock when a player is forced onto the ground.

How does one complete a pass in rugby?
In rugby, a player can carry, pass, or kick the ball. A highly used maneuver is to pass the ball to another player. While advancing down the field, the player carrying the ball may pass it to another as long as it is a lateral or backward pass. No forward passes are permitted in rugby.

How does one score a goal in rugby?
A goal is scored when a player intentionally places the ball over the goal line of the opposing team. This is called a ‘try.’ Trys are worth five points each. After a successful try, the scoring team is allowed to kick for an extra point. If the ball goes through the upright goal posts of the opposing team, an additional point is added.
